Sensory Neurophysiology in the Tactile Spine of a Cockroach
To investigate the directionality of the stimuli resulting from the movement of the cockroach legs, the voltage measurements of moving a spine towards the leg and away from the leg were taken and compared. The null hypothesis for this was that there would not be different electrical voltages for each direction of movement. The alternative hypothesis was that the direction of movement would produce different electrical responses.
To examine the effect of stimulus duration on electrical response, the cockroach spine was moved for different durations of time and the corresponding electrical responses were measured. Based on the electrical responses, it can be determined if the mechanical stimulus of the spin does not affect the electrical response. Alternatively, the mechanical stimulus of the spin could affect the corresponding electrical response. By changing the voltage of the stimulus, the relationship between the intensity of the stimulus and the maximum amplitude of the electrical response can be determined. One hypothesis is that increasing or decreasing the stimulus intensity does not affect the maximum amplitude of the electrical response. The other is that changing the stimulus intensity does in fact show a difference in the electrical response. To investigate the implications of the conduction velocity measured from cockroach spines, the distance from the base of the spine to the recording electrode and the time between the stimulus and the electrical response were measured for different spines on the leg. The resulting average conduction velocity was compared to the conduction velocity of typical myelinated axons of mammals (20 meters/second). From this comparison, the hypothesis that the sensory neurons present in cockroaches are not myelinated could be formed. The comparison could also yield the hypothesis that these sensory neurons are myelinated.
